Newborn Sessions: What to Expect from your Images.

If you are reading this, then you are probably looking at booking a newborn session for your baby (congratulations!) Your probably also wondering what a newborn photography session is all about.

If you are just starting out your journey into the world of newborn photography, my “How does a newborn session work?” post walks you behind the scenes of an enitre session at my studio. However, if you are already considering your options and wondering what to expect from your newborn gallery…this is for you!

Its all in the styling.

There is a lot to think about when planning a newborn shoot. Props and accessories are very intentional, not just heaped together hoping for the best.

When I shop for props I am looking for something beautiful that will enhance the look of your images. It needs to be the perfect size, snug and cozy for your little one to snooze in. I knit most of my own wraps, hats and outfits – giving me full control over colours and textures. I use only the softest yarns that are gentle on baby skin.

In the studio you will find a wide variety of coloured fabrics to pose baby on, from soft neutrals, to greys, to beautiful pastels. I understand that everyone has different tastes and decor within thier homes, so I try and ensure that I have something that everyone will love. Why worry about your home and decor I hear you say?! Well, ultimately that is where your images are going to end up. Together we will work out the setups that are going to look best for you.

Once you are booked in with me, I’ll contact you to arrange a consultation. This all sounds very formal, but I promise its not! I’ll invite you to the studio to meet with me and discuss all of your likes/dislikes and preferences. We will run through colour choices, and the props you like the best. Whether or not you want to use any cute little bows or bonnets. If you are unable to do this in person, then we can do this over the phone.

This is a really important reason to get booked in early – it ensures you get what you want. It gives us time to plan together for your session. We can find the right colours, the right props and find out what your most loved poses are.

And its all in the prep.

To really make the most of your time in the studio, you’ll want to make sure you read the little pdf I emailed you. There is nothing groundbreaking in there, but it will (hopefully!) ensure you arrive with a sleepy, content baby. And a sleepy, content baby will be ready to start their newborn session on arrival. Meaning all those beautiful poses and setups we planned are going to be hot footing their way into your beautiful newborn gallery.

Scenario one: you arrive with a sleepy baby who is ready to rock their newborn session. Obviously this is the ideal and what we are hoping for, as it will allow us to get straight to work on creating your perfect newborn gallery.

Scenario two: you arrive (having followed the prep) but your baby is awake. Firsty, DON’T PANIC! This happens, and its not a crisis! When baby is awake at the start of the session (and they are clean, fed and burped) then we will just flex around that. If baby is happy but awake, we can take that opportunity to capture some beautiful images of them with their eyes open – and if we are lucky (and patient!) they will look right into the camera! If they are really fighting sleep, then we can switch it up and start with wrapped poses. Wrapping them will make them feel very safe and secure, and cosy – 9 times out of 10 they will fall asleep and we can go from there.

But what about the awake baby who is not so happy? Well, there is usually a reason. And together we will find it and fix it. But its important to remember that babies do have off days, just the same as we do. If we are having no luck in settling your baby after an hour or so, I will rebook your session. We will shoot another day, as I don’t want you to feel stressed over this (as baby will definitely pick up on this) Its worth noting that this is a VERY RARE sceanrio when we can’t complete a session.

So what might your gallery look like?

The colours may be different. There may be more or less props. But essentially, your gallery will probably look at lot like this one.

Newborn Sessions: What to Expect from your Images

These two sets of images were created for my lovely client’s 1st and 2nd babies. She wanted them to compliment each other and be able to display her wall art in the same rooms (matching sets) So we used a similar colour palette for the most part, and added some girly touches on gallery two.
